Abstract
Catastrophic Health Expenses(CHE) is an indicator to identify the financial burden of the households for the medical spending beyond a certain level. 5 years¡¯ Korea Health Panel data from 2009 to 2013 was used for the empirical analysis.
Panel logit estimation to find the determinants of CHE showed that the elderly, the households with low-income and rhe households who had chronical diseases, could experience CHE with high probability. We, then, analyzed the determinants of the medical expenses and the quality of life for the elderly, the households with low-income and the households who had chronical diseases, respectively.
Estimation results showed that the households with high income, with many household members, and with chronical diseases spent more medical expenses.
The medical expenses had adverse effect on the quality of life. The households with high educational background, people who involved economic activities, and the households who exercised periodically, enjoyed higher quality of life. Smoking, chronical diseases, melancholia, suicidal thought had adverse effects on the quality of life.
In conclusion, the priority of the health policy should be focused on protecting households from CHE and enhancing the quality of life of the households.
